Building and Connecting Learning Communities - a presentation by Dr. Steven Katz

"Students are not only the centre of the education system; they are the only reason for its existence!" - R.L MacDonald

Teachers who are engaged in cycles of effective professional learning take greater responsibility for the learning of each student. Building effective professional learning communities suggests a group of people sharing and critically interrogating their practice in an on-going, reflective, collaborative and learning focused way. The session will focus on the attributes of professional learning communities which build and support effective evidence-informed learning communities that "enable" professional learning in relation to defined student learning needs
Steven Katz, PhD is a director with the research and evaluation firm Aporia Consulting Ltd. and a permanent faculty member in Human Development and Applied Psychology at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) of the University of Toronto. He is an associate member of the School of Graduate Studies and is the coordinator of the Psychology of Learning and Development initial teacher education program component.

Dr. Katz has a doctorate in human development and applied psychology, with a specialization in applied cognitive science. His areas of expertise include cognition and learning, teacher education, networked learning communities, and the design of data-driven systems for organizational accountability, planning, and improvement. He has received the Governor General's medal for excellence in his field, and has been involved in research and evaluation, professional development, and consulting with a host of educational organizations around the world. He is also the co-author of Leading Schools in a Data Rich World.

School Improvement Planning:  Evidence-Informed Decision Making in Action

Research has demonstrated that traditional school improvement planning has not resulted in increased student achievement. School improvement planning must start with identifying the learning needs of our students and then plan the knowledge and skills which teachers need to enable students to bridge the gap between current understandings and valued outcomes. This session will focus on the processes for identifying the learning needs of our students and utilize the School Effectiveness Framework as the data collection process to plan the learning needs of our teachers in relation to our students.
